ROAD
RACHEL ON THE
WORDSMITH-RESS
While I am not constant in my writing practice, it has been one that has followed me my whole life. I remember writing a lot of angst-ridden poetry as a teenager and enjoying writing long essays in highschool and college. I sometimes wish I had majored in writing, as they say that writing develops one's thinking. The more you can structure your thoughts, the better you can cut your own trail through life. And I honestly enjoy writing, it's a process of ever greater refinement. Really saying exactly what you mean. It's a detailed work, that requires concentration and discernment.
Then some years ago, I had an ex-boyfriend tell me that I should start writing a blog, based on how I was a tour guide and ended up traveling to all these incredible places, effectively giving me a lot of travel experience. And he was right, in that epoch I was travelling all over Italy, from Puglia, to Tuscany, to Piedmont, Umbria, as well as Hawaii and the Floriday Keys, leading trips, so I did (do?) have all this great knowledge on the best places to go, and the coolest things to see and do.
However, writing solely for the purpose of travel logging never interested me enough as I always asked myself, "what can I share with anyone that's actually worth anything!?" I wanted to communicate some knowledge, truth or insight. I still ask myself that very question. But something inside me has changed. I have realized that the courageous thing to do, that develops me, is to share my thoughts, my persepctive, and epidsodes of my life story with anyone who cares to listen. It's a creative art that benefits me in the doing and in the sharing.
I generally write very fast and don't need to take too much time to think to get words onto the paper–or let's say sentences on my laptop. Even friends' birthday cards, I never was the one to agonize over the perfect thing to say. I just want it to flow. I want to be in a flow, and express a flow.
So my blog is just that, thoughts on life, on experiences that have happened to me personally, on what I am struggling with, on questions of existence. My mom suggested the great title, "Rachel on the Road" and I think it's a perfect name. Against my own will it sometimes seems to stay at home and be super chill, save money, make life simple, I seem to always find myself in different fun, interesting and beautiful places, and I am a perennial student of life. I hope you will join the written exploration of my journey.
